Pop-up adverts (overlays): the rules
Pop-up adverts are switched off on this site at the moment.
What your pop-up advert is allowed to do
- Appear once the visitor has been on the page for a short while, if the visitor matches the places and age groups you chose.
- It appears after 5 seconds.
- A visitor sees at most 1 pop-up per visit and 2 per day.
- After a visitor closes it, no pop-up is shown to that visitor for 3 days.
- It can appear on: the home page, posts, pages, category and archive pages.
What it always has
- The label "Advertisement" and your advert marked "Sponsored".
- A clear Close button, and the Escape key closes it. Clicking outside it closes it too.
- Keyboard and screen reader support, and no movement for visitors who ask for less motion.
What it can never do
- Open in a new window or behind the page (no pop-unders).
- Hide, move or fake its Close button, or ask the visitor to click.
- Start a download, play sound, change the address of the page or stop the visitor from leaving.
- Appear again and again: after it is closed it stays away for the period above.
- Appear on the Advertisers page, search or error pages, or to a visitor who said they are under 18.
- Appear when the campaign is not paid, approved, live, scheduled for now and not suspended.
The site team marks which placements are pop-ups. When you choose such a placement for your campaign, your advert is shown as a pop-up under these rules. Nothing about the visitor is stored on the site for this; counts and the closing are kept in the visitor's own browser.
